Nowadays it is ‘easier’ to become an author. The possibilities to publish your own book are vast and varied and can also be adapted to your budget. Different genres have different needs. For example, if you are writing a novel, you will need an attractive cover, great content and hopefully people who enjoy your writing.
Having sent a few drafts to publishing companies, I considered myself ‘lucky’ when around 3 of them replied and said they were interested in helping me publishing my book. To become a ‘traditional’ published author is a blessing and very rare nowadays. My curiosity awoke and I started asking about the steps to publish my books. Great was my surprise when all three publishers asked me for money in advance so they could publish my book.
I started researching more and this is what traditional publishers are currently doing now, I guess they started doing this to offer some sort of competition to self-published platforms such as Amazon. I found it a lot cheaper becoming a self-published author that giving big companies over just £3000 to get the book out. The amount I mentioned above is what a self-help book of around 50000 words may cost you to publish through a publisher.
My manuscript is still untouched as my path suddenly changed and I started writing stories for my children. They seemed to enjoy them but whose child doesn’t enjoy a story read by their parents, right? Then, the infamous pandemic happened and family trips got postpone, then cancelled. I live in the UK and I am originally from Paraguay. For many reasons and work being one of them, spending Christmas in Paraguay was becoming a distant memory. I thought of ways to show my children my country’s tradition and I wrote my first children’s book, which is part of Christmas Around the World Series’. My book is called ‘The Paraguay Christmas Book’ and it is paired up with a colouring book ‘Welcome to Paraguay – Feliz Navidad’.
Publishing a children’s book has more details that need covered than other genres. The most important of all is the drawings. Any Children’s book is judged by its cover and rightly so. If children find the cover ‘cool’ and engaging, they will feel curious about the book’s content.
These are the 3 simple steps I followed to see my vision become a reality.
- Join Fiverr – an amazing platform for talented freelancers, very easy to navigate with incredible talented and professional people. This is a very reliable platform and you can judge the work quality by the professional’s ratings, their level within Fiverr, customers’ reviews and the free Success Manager’s help.
I strongly advise everyone to navigate and study the platform and sellers before committing to anyone. Always, ask for a sample of their work too. I had a brilliant experience with the suggested sellers given to me by the Success Manager. Sometimes, if you are stuck because of the choices available, asking the Success Manager for advice is a clever move.
2. Make a plan. If you are an aspiring children’s author as I was, you are also probably learning ‘on the go’. I read books on self-publishing, listened to podcasts, etc and made my plan. Once my plan was made, I set a budget and tried my best to stick to it. I ensured to look for editors to check my work. You will find plenty of editors on Fiverr, find editors that know the niche you are writing for as they will essentially have a wealth of knowledge and can provide you with useful advice. I had my books edited twice by different editors to measure the quality of my work and avoid looking unprofessional once the book is out.
3. Last but not least, find the right illustrator and set a ‘bigger’ budget for the illustrations. Remember, a children’s book is judge by its cover. Fiverr’s content can be really overwhelming at times as there are amazing professionals there. However, do your research first and never hesitate to ask their customer service (Success Manager) for help if you are ever stuck. I have to say that I did not use the Success Manager for my first book. I did ask for their help for my second book though and I can only tell you that it will be a foolish decision not to use their help again in the future. It is Free!!!
