It is about to be a year since our last trip abroad! Anyway, we are still hopeful to take our first trip in Easter 2021. Let’s just focus now on how we can celebrate St Valentine’s day! No complaints as we are all healthy!
The 14th February is around the corner, our children are at home, we live abroad and with the pandemic and all, our celebration will be as a family. We have two gorgeous children, one is almost 4 years old and our last baby is 22 months old. Here, I am sharing some simple and not too onerous activities to do at home with them.
Ideas for St. Valentines …good old baking with the children.
I always look for easy recipes to bake with them. The almost 4 years old is always patient and follows instructions meanwhile the 22 months old tries to destroy the kitchen or climbs everywhere. So finding a simple and easy recipe is key to try and be as safe as possible.
A perfect recipe that so far has never failed is Mary Berry’s fork biscuits. These biscuits only need 3 ingredients and very little time in the oven. So get your apron out and get the ingredients ready.
Ingredients
100gr of butter (softened)
50gr of caster sugar
150 gr of self-raising flour
Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 160°C fan/ gas mark 4. Slowly start beating the butter with the sugar and then add the flour. Ensure to mix the batter with your hands. If you are going with the love theme, use a heart shaped cookie cutter, you will get approximately 10 biscuits, depending on the size of your cookie cutter. You can also use the batter as playdough and the children can shape them as hearts. My 22 months old usually eats more cookie dough than makes biscuits when trying to shape the dough.
Bake them in the oven (15-20 minutes) or until golden. You can then all have fun decorating and eating the cookies.

Heart shaped cards
This is a very simple yet fun entertainment for the kids. Great to practise cutting shapes with scissors! Get some cardboard, red colour paper or a simple A4 paper, recycled paper will also be fine. Draw hearts and show them how to cut them and decorate them using colour pencils or markers, glitter or sticking bits of paper into the hearts. These decorated hearts can later be used for different games.
Find and fetch the hearts game
Hide the hearts around the house or garden and ask your children to go find and fetch them, the one with the most cards wins and can choose what TV programme to watch first when it is TV time. The game can also be played in teams, parents vs children, etc. With this game, you are using a kinaesthetic activity and the reward is simple. If you don’t fancy offering a reward, you can just not mention it. Children of 3 and 2 are still trying to figure out the concept of winning something after a game and sometimes it can backfire. You know your children better so you make the call.
Giving your heart to someone you care game
Recycling the cards made earlier, once the family is at the table and supper is finished, you can all have a fun game. This game can be adapted depending on your children’s age. Parents can start by picking up a heart and saying “I give my heart to…because she behaved really well today”, “I give my heart to… because he shared his toys today”, etc. I suggest parents start first if you have young children so children can start working out what to do. You could also use phrases such as “ I give you my heart because I love when you play with me, cook my favourite food, etc.”
The aim of the game is to guide children to expand their language and vocabulary and at the same time teaching them to be grateful. It is an easy, simple and enjoyable way to finish St Valentine’s day.
If you are running out of ideas, pinterest has plenty!

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4
year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.

There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.

She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off
topic but I had to tell someone!
